The great thing about the Florida Keys is that there is always something to catch. If you want to just get those rods bent, there are many species that can do just that. We can pull on some giant Jack Crevalle along the bridge pilings or fish for redfish along the docks and channel edges. Other fish like Mangrove Snapper, which not only put up a great fight but are very tasty are plentiful through out the Florida Keys!
The best times for fun fishing is anytime, that's right each and everyday of the year. Although, Winter time months bring unpredictable weather due to cold fronts, Barracuda, Sea Trout, Redfish and Snook are prime targets in the winter. Florida Bay offers tons of action with snapper, jacks, and ladyfish.
Other types of fishing include Spanish Mackerel or Pompano fishing in Florida Bay. These fish can be caught on fly or spin and are targeted around 10 miles offshore on the sea grass beds or unnatural bottom from Marathon. Sight fishing giant barracuda off the shallow water flats is also very productive and extremely fun. Tossing poppers or rubber baits across the flats usually end up with explosive runs and missile like launches through the air. .
Shark fishing has always been popular especially with the children. Marathon offers some of the best shark fishing in the entire Florida Keys. Species like Lemon Sharks, Bull Sharks, Black Tips, Hammerheads and even Tiger sharks roam the shallow water looking for prey. Most of the shark fishing I do is in 3 feet of water or less. Watching a giant shark eat your bait in skinny, gin clear water is absolutely insane! Sharks are available to catch all times of the year but the spring and summer are the best.
